Park Overview

Semuliki National Park covers an area of 220 square kilometres (85 square miles) and is part of the extensive Ituri Forest that stretches across the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is characterised by its lowland tropical rainforest, hot springs, and diverse habitats that support an incredible variety of flora and fauna.

The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including over 60 mammal species such as forest elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and pygmy hippopotamuses. Primates are also abundant, with species such as chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Semuliki is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 441 bird species, including 35 found nowhere else in East Africa. Notable bird species include the Nkulengu Rail, Congo Serpent Eagle, and the lyre-tailed honeyguide.

Semuliki National Park is renowned for its hot springs, particularly the Sempaya Hot Springs, which are a major attraction. The park’s lush and ancient forest, which has remained largely unchanged for over 25,000 years, provides a unique glimpse into the past. The Semuliki River, which forms the park’s western border, is another prominent feature, creating a natural boundary with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Visitors to Semuliki National Park can engage with the local Batwa pygmies and Bwamba people, who have lived in harmony with the forest for centuries.
