Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers an area of 996 square kilometres (385 square miles) and encompasses the central part of the Rwenzori Mountain range, which includes Africa’s third-highest peak, Mount Stanley, at 5,109 meters (16,763 feet). The park is characterized by its rugged terrain, glaciers, waterfalls, and diverse vegetation zones ranging from tropical rainforest to alpine meadows.
The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife adapted to its unique habitats. Key species include forest elephants, chimpanzees, and various types of duikers. The Rwenzori is also known for its rich birdlife, with over 217 bird species, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, and the Rwenzori Double-collared Sunbird. The park’s higher altitudes host unique flora and fauna, including giant lobelias and groundsels.
The steep and rocky mountain sides are covered in vegetation of various phases, beginning with savannah grassland on the rift valley bottom and progressing through grassland woodland, moorland, bamboo, and lush and wet alpine forest. This diverse environment supports many mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and other species, although spotting mammals can be challenging due to the steep and harsh terrain.

The tallest peak on Stanley is Margherita, which stands at about 5,109 meters. This peak is magnificent and highly impressive for anyone who wants to trek to the mountain’s summit. However, the trek to the peak is rather exhausting, requiring rigorous preparations and equipment such as trekking sticks, weatherproof shoes, shelters, drinking water, a guide with a first aid kit, and a ranger.
